Understanding Your Herniated Disc

Knowledge is the first step toward relief. Here's what's happening in your spine — and why it hurts.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

Your spinal discs act as cushions between vertebrae. Each disc has a tough outer ring (annulus fibrosus) and a soft, gel-like center (nucleus pulposus). A herniated disc occurs when the soft center pushes through a tear in the outer ring — pressing on nearby nerves and causing pain, numbness, or weakness.

Common Symptoms

  • •Radiating pain down the leg (sciatica) or arm
  • •Numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles”
  • •Muscle weakness in the affected area
  • •Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or coughing
  • •Difficulty standing or walking for extended periods

Why Does This Happen?

Disc herniations can result from age-related wear and tear (disc degeneration), heavy lifting with poor form, sudden twisting movements, or repetitive stress. The L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs in the lower back are the most commonly affected — which is why lower back and leg pain are so common.

The Good News

A herniated disc does not automatically mean surgery. Many patients find significant relief through non-surgical treatments like spinal decompression therapy — which targets the root cause by reducing pressure on the affected disc.

Bulging discs occur when the disc extends beyond its normal boundary but the outer ring remains intact. Herniated discs involve a tear in the outer ring. Both can cause nerve compression, and the DRX9000 is designed to treat both conditions.

How the DRX9000 Treats Herniated Discs

The DRX9000 is not general traction. It's a computer-controlled system that targets your specific disc level with precision.

1

Creates Negative Pressure Within the Disc

The DRX9000 gently distracts the spine at a precise angle calibrated to your specific disc level (e.g., L4-L5 or L5-S1). This creates negative intradiscal pressure — a vacuum effect that draws herniated material back toward the center of the disc.

2

Promotes Nutrient Flow & Healing

The negative pressure also facilitates the flow of oxygen, water, and nutrients into the damaged disc — supporting the body's natural repair mechanisms and promoting disc regeneration.

3

Physically Restores Disc Height

In a peer-reviewed study by UCSF researchers, disc height increased from 7.5mm to 8.8mm after treatment — and this increase directly correlated with pain reduction. This isn't just symptom management; it's structural improvement.

4

Bypasses Muscle Guarding

Unlike traditional traction, the DRX9000 uses a proprietary split-table design with built-in sensors that detect and adjust for muscle resistance — ensuring the decompression force reaches the disc, not the muscles.

5

Painless, 30-Minute Sessions

Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes. Most patients find the treatment comfortable — some even fall asleep. There is zero downtime; you walk out the same day.

"Dr. Madalian and his staff are exceptional. I have been successfully treated for a painful herniated disc on the DRX 9000 Lumbar True Spinal Decompression Machine, as an alternative to fusion surgery. Dr. Madalian's care, concern, expertise and treatment using the DRX machine helped me through a very tough time; for that I am grateful. I would highly recommend his services for any chiropractic needs."

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about herniated disc treatment.

What causes a herniated disc?

A herniated disc occurs when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior. This can result from age-related wear and tear, heavy lifting, or sudden movements. The herniated material can press on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness.

How does spinal decompression help a herniated disc?

The DRX9000 gently stretches the spine, creating negative pressure within the disc. This vacuum effect may help retract the herniated disc material and promote the flow of nutrients and oxygen to accelerate healing — all without surgery.

Is spinal decompression painful?

Most patients report that spinal decompression therapy is comfortable and relaxing. Some patients even fall asleep during sessions. Results and comfort levels vary by individual.

How many sessions will I need?

Treatment plans typically involve 20-30 sessions over 6-8 weeks. Dr. Madalian will review your imaging and condition to create a personalized plan during your initial consultation.

How does the cost compare to surgery?

Many patients find that a full course of DRX9000 therapy costs a fraction of what spinal surgery would — with zero hospital bills, no anesthesia, and no downtime. Dr. Madalian will discuss your options during your consultation.

Can a herniated disc heal on its own?

Some herniated discs may improve over time with rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. However, many patients continue to experience chronic pain because the underlying disc compression remains. Spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 is designed to address this root cause by creating negative pressure within the disc, promoting retraction of herniated material and nutrient flow to support healing.

What is the difference between a bulging disc and a herniated disc?

A bulging disc occurs when the disc extends outward beyond its normal boundary, but the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) remains intact. A herniated disc involves a tear or rupture in the outer layer, allowing the inner gel-like material (nucleus pulposus) to leak out. Both conditions can compress nearby nerves and cause pain. The DRX9000 is designed to treat both by gently decompressing the affected disc.

Do I need an MRI before starting treatment?

An MRI or other diagnostic imaging helps Dr. Madalian identify the exact disc level and type of injury affecting your spine. If you already have recent imaging, bring it to your consultation. If you don't, Dr. Madalian will guide you on next steps during your visit.
